Taste Test: Stronger Faster Healthier Fish Oil
SFH Fish Oil Taste Test from Nick Kirkes on Vimeo.
Ok, no mind blowing information in this video, but it’s my first video blog post. Gotta start somewhere, right? One take, no editing, fuck all here it is.
Tonight I cracked open a bottle of Chocolate OmegaMaine Fish Oil from StrongerFasterHealthier.com. This was really more of a taste test than a full blown review, which will come after I’ve had some time with the product. I’ve been using a Metagenics product (EPA DHA 720) for some time, which I could only purchase through a local chiropractor (it’s still not clear to me why Metagenics only sells through medical providers and not to the general public). While I wasn’t actively seeking out a new fish oil, several athletes and nutrionists whom I hold in high regard have been very positive on the product, so I thought it worth my time.
I purchased the 5-pack sampler/starter/travel kit, containing 5 2-oz. bottles, one of each flavor available. The website states that the pack, taken at the suggested 2 tsp. dosage per day, should yield a month supply. The flavors are Lemon, Mint, Tangerine, Vanilla, and Chocolate. Beyond the flavoring, the two products seem to differ primarily in delivery: SFH is a flavored liquid and MG is a gel tab. The EPA DHA 720 seems to be slightly more concentrated by dosage (the contents of two gel tabs can’t be more than 1 tsp), and is a little more cost effective with a 2 month supply at just a few dollars more than 1 month from SFH. Time will tell if the delivery method and quality of the fats themselves are worth the additional expense. (For what it’s worth, I used a discount code garnered from the SFH Facebook page which lopped 10% off my order; go check it out).
My initial impressions of the SFH fish oil is good: there is no fish taste at all, and the flavoring isn’t overpoweringly fake. The chocolate flavor wasn’t anything to brag about, but it was drinkable. Definitely better than other liquid fish oils I’ve tried in the past, even if it’s not something I’d want to sip on like a cocktail (keeping in mind that I’m coming off using a gel tab that is highly convenient with taste whatsoever). I’m going to experiement with mixing flavors, as well as adding the oil into my occassional morning smoothie. The convenience of the gel tab is high for me, but I’ll give SFH a full month and a healthy review once I’ve formed some useful opinions.
In the meantime, check it out for yourself at StrongerFasterHealther.com, or hit them up on Twitter: @SFHFishOil. Want an idea of how much you should dose yourself with this stuff? Check out the Robb Wolf/Whole 9 Fish Oil Calculator.
